CAUTION:  - There are some serious issues you need to consider before buying any steel building.

Do some research - Not all building companies are alike and not all are approved to sell in Canada. If you do an internet search using the phrase "steel buildings" or "metal +buildings" you will get over one million results on Google. In fact most companies that sell steel buildings via the internet don't actually make anything, they just sell buildings manufactured by other companies. We have seen a lot of very slick internet based advertising for different pre-engineered building products and systems from companies that are not approved for sale in Canada. In fact, only 28 Canadian and US manufacturing companies currently have the mandatory CAN/CSA A660-04 certification to sell in Canada as is required by the National Building Code of Canada 2005 (NBCC) under section 4.3.4.3 which states:

4.3.4.3 Steel Building Systems

1) Steel building systems shall be manufactured by companies certified to the requirements of CSA-A660, "Certification of Manufacturers of Steel Building Systems."

CAN / CSA A660-04 is the standard established by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) for pre-engineered steel buildings sold in Canada which the NBCC and all provinces and territories building codes require steel building manufacturers to have in order to sell buildings in Canada. A660-04 certification is provided out by Quasar, a division of the CWB Group (Canadian Welding Bureau) Quasar is accredited by the CSA to certify steel building manufacturers for the A660-04 certification. If the company you are considering does not have an A660-04 certificate then you may not be able to construct it at your location and you may be denied insurance coverage during and after the construction phase and some building jurisdictions may not issue a building permit or an occupancy permit preventing you from using it even if you did construct it. In a worst case scenario you could be required to dismantle the structure.

According to the CAN/CSA Standard, a steel building system (SBS) features steel for the structural components plus related accessories engineered and designed as a total building system. The building exterior is not limited to steel products, but can be built to suit the owner’s requirements for masonry, brick, steel, fabric or a combination of these materials. These building systems are fabricated by the manufacturer at a central location and supplied to builders across Canada. The manufacturer is responsible for the structural design and fabrication of the building system, and the builder is responsible for the erection and related work.

To find out which companies are approved for sale in Canada visit the Quasar website and click on the Registered Client List link on the left. This will open a search window where you select the CAN/CSA A660-04 listing and then click search. This will take you to a window listing all the certified manufacturers within North America that are approved to manufacture steel buildings for sale in Canada. Remember, there are only 39 approved facilities so if the company you plan to buy from doesn't manufacture an approved product you may be getting less than you are paying for, you might not get approval to construct and you could be denied insurance coverage before and after construction.

Check with your engineer, your building permit issuing office and/or building inspector to learn more about the NBCC regulations for steel buildings sold in Canada. Be sure you compare code compliance, package specifications, warranty and references, not just the price, to make sure you get what you are paying for.
