NO posts, NO Columns, NO Trusses Steel arch buildings or Quonsets,
as they are commonly known, are based on the Nissen Hut which was first
developed in WW1 by the British Military. Different versions of the Nissen
Hut were developed during WW2 in different countries including the
"Quonset Hut" which was the American version of the Nissen Hut and
which got its' name from the location where it was manufactured, Quonset
Point, Rhode Island.
Quonsets were first sold commercially in 1950 with the introduction of a revolutionary self supporting steel arch building design. The shape and panelized design reduced both manufacturing and construction costs making the steel arch building very competitive with conventional construction methods. Originally a semi-circular shape, Quonsets sold mainly to agricultural end users and was quickly adopted by the US Military before becoming widely accepted by industrial, commercial and even residential end users. Quonsets have since evolved to become one of the most versatile building systems available as they are clear span and have NO posts, NO Columns, NO Trusses, just clear open space within. The introduction of steel foundation
systems has taken the development of the Quonset a step further.
Quonsets are unique in that they do not have
concentrated loads so they do not require an expensive concrete foundation
as typical structural steel buildings do. Quonsets constructed on
steel
foundation systems are perfectly suited for remote or environmentally
sensitive areas or temporary uses (permit may not be required) and
are completely portable and fully re-locatable. While Quonsets are used for almost any purpose imaginable, some of the common applications are:
Quonsets are available in a variety of sizes from 6' (2m) wide up to 280' (85m) in width and in any length in 2' increments and a choice of building shapes including straight walls and the original circular shape. Arch buildings are clear span with no internal supports so that the interior is completely unobstructed, unlike conventional structural steel which have thick columns at the sides or wood framed buildings which have deep truss chords overhead that prevent using the space above the top of the walls. Combined with straight walls, the clear span space allows use of the complete floor area right up to the outside walls. Quonsets are:
